VOC regulations require that all auto-refinish facilities in Canada must convert to low-VOC and waterborne refinish products and processes by June 2010. The compressed air system forms an integral part of many auto refinish centres in providing the air to power spray painting tools. It is very important to review the compressed air system in preparation for this change.

Compressed air quality is extremely important when using waterborne paints. Once sprayed on a surface, waterborne paints will have a layer of water vapour on top of them. To remove this there must be consistent, clean and sufficient air flow. The volume of air delivered is therefore also critical. There must be a high airflow in order to accelerate the drying process to stop a skin forming on top of the coat of paint.

Adequate compressed air filtration is also of paramount importance. Typically, in this application there will be a two-stage filtration system. However, due to the air quality requirements when using waterborne paints, a three-stage filtration system is recommended.

A simple evaluation of the compressed air system will identify what, if any, changes need to be made to ensure the compressor works in harmony with the waterborne paints.

Overlooking the compressed air system may lead to a number of costly problems down the line including poor paint work which has to be repainted or corrected – a time consuming task.
